Saint Marina’s Church

While driving towards the green and mountainous Eptagonia, all visitors have the chance to enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful surroundings of the village. Towards the village centre, arises a magnificent church dedicated to Saint (Agia) Marina. According to an inscription, the church was built at the beginning of the 19th century and the width of its external wall reaches 1 metre. The construction is made of black stone and the parvis is paved with slabs. Stone was used for the wall surrounding the church. The bell tower, which is quite high, is located on the west side of the church. Agia Marina’s church was built with arches uniting the ceiling and there is only one, spacious chamber (for 250 persons approximately). Five years ago, the community of Eptagonia helped preserve this beautiful construction. There are no murals in the church. There is a new wooden carved iconostasis, where the old and valuable icons are kept. The icon dedicated to Agia Marina is time-honoured and is kept in the iconostasis of the church. The community of Eptagonia honours Agia Marina every year on the 17th of July with the procession of the icon.

Saint George’s Chapel

Saint George’s Chapel was built in the 50’s with the community’s contribution and donations.  The chapel is located on the west side of the village. It was also built with arches and has only one chamber. Its roof is covered with tiles. It was not built with stone and it is therefore, white on the external. The parvis is surrounded by tall cypresses, planes and pine trees. The bell tower abuts against the eastern side of the church. This small church has a capacity of only 50 persons. It has a humble interior.

There are no murals. The iconostasis is wooden and simple and it also has wooden holders for the psaltery. Its location is ideal, as it has a marvellous view of the village. The chapel was in 2002 renovated by Mr. Tassos Televantides.

Services take place at the chapel 6-7 times annually. Eptagonia honours Saint (Agios) George every year on the 23rd of April and 3rd of November with the procession of the icon.

Saint Photios’s Chapel.

Saint Photios’s Chapel is on the eastern side of the villge and it is syrrounded by houses. The cultural centre of the village is only 200 metres away from the village and the community cemetery is also close. This simple and humble chapel was built around 1950 and was dedicated to Saint Photios.

Its external walls were built with stone. The parvis is paved with slabs and the cell tower is in the middle of the construction. Its interior is plain; its iconostasis is wooden and its icons are well preserved even though they are not very old. There are no murals but there are holders for the psalteries. There is also an amphitheatrically designed room for women, who want to attend Mass.

Services take place at the chapel 6-7 times annually. Eptagonia honours Saint (Agios) Photios every year on the 3rd of August and a lot of visitors take part in these celebrations.
